Key takeaways

  • A design award tells you how a jury perceived a project at one point in time, but little about an agency's process, collaboration and impact
  • The big programs are funded by fees: at the German Design Award 2026, entry costs €390 to €590 net per project, and in the Communications Design category a win adds €2,900 net for the service package
  • At the German Brand Award 2026 there were 1,676 entries from 18 nations, according to the organizer
  • At Awwwards, Nominee means the team released the submission to the jury after a manual review
  • Three vetting questions matter most: What role did the agency have in the awarded project, who submitted it, and at which tier was it awarded

By Edip Kilinc, founder of Webwavers. Published October 31, 2026. Last updated October 31, 2026. Reading time: about 16 minutes.

Short answer: A design award shows that a jury found a specific project convincing at a specific point in time, based on set criteria. It says little about how an agency works, how it handles change requests, or whether a result will work for your company. Use awards as a hint of design quality, not as a selection criterion. Always check what role the agency had in the project, who submitted it, and at which tier it was awarded.

Key takeaways

  • Awards judge projects or brands, rarely the collaboration. For agencies, they are an indicator of design quality.
  • The big programs charge entry fees, and on success additional fees for the service package with the label. That is not a flaw, but you should know it.
  • Tiers are not comparable: "Nominee", "Winner", "Gold" and "Best of Best" mean different things depending on the organizer.
  • Ask about the agency's role in the project. An awarded project can come from several parties.
  • Weigh case studies, reference calls and process higher than badges.

What an award measures and what it doesn't

When you compare agencies, you run into badges on almost every homepage. They look like a neutral verdict on quality. In reality, every award answers a specific question, and that question is usually narrower than the badge suggests.

What an award typically measures:

  • the design quality of a submitted project
  • innovation, concept or brand strategy, depending on the program
  • how a panel of experts perceived the work at one point in time

What an award typically does not measure:

  • how an agency handles criticism, delays and changes
  • whether a project stayed on budget and on schedule
  • whether the website brings in inquiries or increases applications
  • how well maintenance and support work after launch
  • how much of the submitted work is actually the work of the agency that advertises it

The last point is the most delicate. A project is submitted, not an agency. Several parties work on large projects, and badges on an agency's site don't say what share each agency had. That is not an accusation but a property of the programs, which is why the question about the role is one of the most important vetting questions below.

The most important awards at a glance

This table summarizes what we could verify from the organizers' pages and the terms of participation. The research is current as of October 31, 2026. Fees are net, meaning plus VAT, and change with each call for entries.

Award Organizer What is judged Jury Tiers Entry fee (net)
German Design Award German Design Council (Rat für Formgebung) Projects in disciplines such as Excellent Communications Design Independent panel of experts from industry, academia, design, architecture and media Winner, Gold (per 2026 terms) €390 to €590 per project, depending on deadline (2026 call)
German Brand Award German Design Council Brand strategy and execution, brands 17 independent experts (2026) Winner, Gold, Best of Best €449 to €635 per project, depending on deadline (current call)
German Web Award See the German Web Award section According to reports from awarded agencies: agencies and submitted projects Expert panel according to reports Top 250 Agency of the Year Ask the organizer
Awwwards Awwwards Websites by design, usability, creativity, content At least 18 jury members per submission, plus community votes Nominee, Honorable Mention, Site of the Day and more Not stated on the evaluation page
Red Dot Brands and Communication Design Red Dot Communication design and brands Expert jury Red Dot, Best of the Best €250 to €470 per entry, depending on phase (2026)

The table shows one thing above all: there is no single "the" award. Processes, tiers and judging logic differ. To size up a badge, you need the terms of the respective organizer.

German Design Award

The German Design Award is given by the German Design Council, formerly called the Rat für Formgebung. Projects can be nominated or submitted by themselves. According to the 2026 terms of participation, eligible projects are those nominated by members of the foundation, by state economics ministries or by the Rat für Formgebung, as well as non-nominated projects in a category. Only one category is possible per project (German Design Award, terms 2026).

Jury and criteria. According to the terms, an independent panel of experts from industry, academia, design, architecture and media decides on the awards. The criteria include ergonomics, functionality, design quality, degree of innovation, sustainability and safety, among others. The order is not a weighting. For websites, the discipline Excellent Communications Design is the most relevant.

Costs. In the 2026 call, the participation fee per project was €390 (early bird until June 13, 2025), €490 (afterward) and €590 (after September 5, 2025), each plus VAT. If a project is awarded, a fee for the service package applies. In the discipline Excellent Communications Design it was €2,900 for "Winner" and €3,900 for "Gold". An optional Nominee Package cost €1,950. For small businesses with annual revenue of up to €100,000, there is a support program that waives the service fee for winners. The entry fee is not affected by it. If a project is not accepted, no further costs arise, according to the organizer (German Design Award, How to).

Assessment. The German Design Award is an established program with an expert jury. The award applies to a project, not to the agency as a whole. And the service package with the label costs money, and taking part is the submitter's decision. A missing badge therefore says little about quality.

German Brand Award

The German Brand Award is also run by the German Design Council and recognizes brand management. There are two disciplines: Excellent Brands and Excellence in Brand Strategy and Creation, plus 16 additional categories (German Brand Award, FAQ 2026).

Jury and process. The 2026 jury consists of 17 independent experts from business, academia, consulting, services and agencies. The process has several stages: the award team reviews all submissions and creates a shortlist for "Winner". Each jury member rates pre-selected projects against set criteria in a voting tool, and the individual scores form the basis for the decision in the plenary session. The best "Winners" in a category become "Gold" in jury groups, and from the Gold projects the plenary session picks "Best of Best". The criteria include brand distinctiveness, degree of innovation, sustainability, relevance to the target group, price premium and economic success (German Brand Award, Jury).

Numbers 2026. According to the organizer, there were 1,676 entries from 18 nations and 569 winners, including 488 "Winner", 68 "Gold" and 13 "Best of Best". For putting a badge in context, the tier counts.

Costs. The current call states an entry fee of €449 (until December 11, 2026), €495 (afterward) and €635 (after March 5, 2027) per project. For the service package on success, the fees are €3,990 ("Winner"), €4,990 ("Gold") and €6,990 ("Best of Best"), each net. An optional Nominee Package costs €1,950 (German Brand Award, Services and Fees).

Assessment. The process is described transparently and judges brand strategy, which is more meaningful for branding projects than for websites. If an agency advertises with "German Brand Award", ask about the tier, category and project.

German Web Award

The German Web Award recognizes agencies and submitted projects. In 2025, Webwavers was awarded Top 250 Agency of the Year in the category Web Design & Development. The following details on process and criteria come from reports by awarded agencies.

According to these reports, the award judges agencies and submitted projects. The overall score is made up of individual scores for several main criteria, named as design, psychological know-how and customer satisfaction. The organizer uses a guiding-question method instead of a classic jury evaluation, in order to reduce subjective influences (Startbase, report by an awarded company). One agency reports more than 2,000 participating advertising agencies, of which at most 2 percent would be awarded, and a minimum average of 7.95 out of 10 points for the award (GAL Digital, 2023). Another agency cites "more than 2000 participants" (NRWZ, 2022).

Assessment. According to these reports, the German Web Award judges the agency as a whole, including customer satisfaction, which sets it apart from pure design awards. The details on quota and points come from reports by awarded agencies. Who judges, what gets submitted and which tiers exist, you can find out from the organizer.

Awwwards

Awwwards is an international program for websites. According to the evaluation page, four criteria feed into the score: design at 40 percent, usability at 30 percent, creativity at 20 percent and content at 10 percent. Every released submission goes to at least 18 jury members. The three ratings that deviate furthest from the average are removed automatically (Awwwards, Evaluation).

What "Nominee" means. A site counts as a Nominee as soon as the Awwwards team has released it after a manual review and sent it to the jury. The voting phase lasts five days. Nominee means nomination by the Awwwards team for judging. A site counts as an "Honorable Mention" from 6.5 jury points, and the "Site of the Day" goes to the site with the highest jury rating. This distinction in particular is often blurred in agency portfolios, which is why it pays to look at the concrete tier.

Costs. The evaluation page lists no submission fee. An overview article mentions that a submission costs money, without naming an amount (Digidop). The submission page offers a Professional subscription for $13.80 per month with a 30 percent discount on submissions (Awwwards, Submit). Check current prices with the organizer. For more on how to put Awwwards in context, see the post Awwwards and international design recognition.

Assessment. Awwwards judges websites on design and usability with a jury and a community. That is meaningful for design and execution quality in terms of motion and interface. It says little about strategy, content for your target group or business success.

Red Dot Brands and Communication Design

The Red Dot Award in the category Brands and Communication Design is another widely used competition for communication design. The entry fee in 2026 was €250 (early bird), €330 (regular) and €470 (latecomer) per entry, plus VAT. Winners pay package fees, from €2,200 for "Red Dot" in the "Regular" package and from €3,300 for "Best of the Best" (Red Dot, dates and costs).

Fees and funding: How to put them in perspective

Anyone reading this quickly wonders: So can you buy awards? The honest answer is more nuanced.

What the fees mean. Awards are businesses that are funded by participation and service fees. That is common and widespread among professional awards in the industry. According to the organizers, the jury decides independently. The fee does not guarantee an award, because the entry fee is due for the judging and the package fee only on success.

What the fees mean for you.

  • Selection by the submitter. Only projects whose submitters pay the fees and prepare the submission are judged at all. A missing badge does not mean a project is worse.
  • Worked example. A win at the German Design Award 2026 in the discipline Excellent Communications Design cost, with the Winner package, €3,290 to €3,490 net by our calculation (€390 to €590 entry plus €2,900 package, our own calculation based on the terms). At the German Brand Award, according to the current call, it is €4,439 to €4,625 net (€449 to €635 plus €3,990). That is why there is a support program for smaller companies that waives the service fee on success.

The programs judge by published criteria. They are just not built to compare agencies.

Six vetting questions for every badge

With these questions, you can size up any badge on an agency's site in a few minutes.

  1. Which award exactly, which year, which category? "Award-winning" is not a statement. Look up the award on the organizer's site.
  2. Which tier? Nominee, Winner, Gold and Best of Best are not the same. At Awwwards, "Nominee" is followed by Honorable Mention and Site of the Day.
  3. What was it awarded for? A project, a brand, an agency? The badge on the homepage is often stated more generally than the award is.
  4. What role did the agency have in the project? Concept, design, execution, all of it? Ask directly.
  5. Who submitted it? The agency or the client? Whoever submitted it framed the project from their own point of view.
  6. Does the project fit mine? An award for a lifestyle brand says little about a dealer platform or an industrial portal.

If an agency answers these follow-up questions openly, that is a good sign, regardless of the badge.

Role in the project: What to ask

On an awarded project, several parties often work together: one agency develops the concept, a second designs, a third builds the site, plus photography, copy and animation. The badge on an agency's site doesn't say what share each agency had. That is why it pays to ask directly, ideally broken down like this:

Role Question for the agency
Strategy and concept Who developed the positioning and the design idea?
Design Who designed the layouts, interface and visual language?
Execution Who built the site, with which system, including interactions?
Content Who delivered the copy, images and videos?
Submission Who entered the project for the award and paid for it?

If an agency names these roles openly, that is a good sign. An award for a web project often recognizes the interplay of concept and execution. Which of the two sides you are looking for in your agency determines how you read the badge. How design and execution relate to each other is described in the guide Design and development from one team. We disclose a concrete example in the section on our own awards.

What awards mean for engineering companies

For industrial and engineering companies, the question of how meaningful awards are comes up especially. Buyers, engineers and managing directors decide by different criteria than a jury for communication design.

What speaks for awards: They show design quality and can work as a signal in recruiting or at trade fairs. More on the sector is on the page Industry and engineering.

What they don't cover: An engineering company needs an agency that presents products that need explaining, variants, technical data and several languages in a clear way. You can't read that from an award. More relevant are:

  • references with similar complexity (product catalogs, dealer portals, multilingual sites)
  • a conversation with a client about collaboration, meeting deadlines and support
  • a traceable way of working in briefing, alignment and handover
  • experience with requirements such as accessibility and data protection

Use awards as an additional argument once the technical questions are answered.

How we handle it: our awards as an example

Because Webwavers itself works with awards, we disclose them the way they appear on the Awards page. You can verify every row with the organizer.

Award Year Category or status according to Webwavers Project Verify at
German Design Award 2026 Communications Design, Web area Seconds (BMI Lab AG) german-design-award.com

A few clarifications that often come up in conversations:

What role did Webwavers have in the German Design Award 2026? On Seconds, we were responsible for the build in Webflow with animations and interactive modules, and the design came from the client's design agency (Seconds project, press). The award goes to the project as a whole.

Did Webwavers win the German Brand Award 2026? According to the Awards page, the project Dualis53 was awarded in the category Brand Strategy and Creation at the tier Winner, and the ceremony took place on June 25, 2026 in Berlin. According to the project page, Webwavers developed the corporate identity for Dualis53 (Dualis53 project, blog).

What does "Nominee" mean at Awwwards? Seconds was listed as a Nominee at Awwwards in 2026, which means: the site was released by the Awwwards team and submitted to the international jury for evaluation.

How much does the German Web Award say? According to the Awards page, it applies to the agency as a whole (Web Design and Development, Top 250 Agency of the Year). More on the process is in the section on the German Web Award.

The Awards page itself describes awards as confirmation that concept and execution fit together, and names what a presence does for a company as the more important yardstick. We agree: check us like any other agency, by case studies, references and process. For further pointers, see the Reviews page.

What to check instead of awards

If awards are not enough as a selection criterion, the question remains what counts instead. This table weights the signals by how meaningful they are.

Signal How meaningful for collaboration How to check it
Reference call with a client Very high Call two clients, ask about meeting deadlines, communication, change requests and support
Case studies with starting point, approach, result High See the checklist in the guide Choosing a UX/UI agency
Described process with approvals High Compare workflow, contacts and feedback rounds, for example on the Process page
Partner status with platforms Medium Check the provider's directory, know the criteria
Awards Low to medium Apply the six vetting questions, clarify the role

FAQ

How meaningful are the design awards an agency advertises with?

They tell you something about the design quality of an awarded project at one point in time. They say little about collaboration, process and results. How meaningful a badge is depends on the organizer, tier, category and the agency's role in the project. Apply the six vetting questions.

Can you buy awards?

Not in the sense of a purchase, but taking part costs money. According to the organizers, a jury decides. The entry fee is due for the judging, the service package fee on success. That filters who takes part at all. A missing badge is therefore not a verdict on quality, and a badge you do see is no guarantee.

What is the difference between Nominee, Winner and Gold?

That depends on the organizer. At the German Brand Award, "Winner", "Gold" and "Best of Best" are the tiers. At Awwwards, "Nominee" means the submission was released to the jury. Always check the tier with the organizer.

What role did Webwavers have in the German Design Award 2026?

On Seconds, Webwavers was responsible for the build in Webflow with animations and interactive modules, and the design came from the client's design agency. The award goes to the project as a whole. Sources and context are in the section on our own awards.

Did Webwavers win the German Brand Award 2026?

According to the Awards page, the project Dualis53 was awarded in the category Brand Strategy and Creation at the tier Winner, and the ceremony took place on June 25, 2026 in Berlin. You can verify it with the organizer at german-brand-award.com. More on the tiers is in the section on the German Brand Award.

Conclusion

Design awards are an indicator of design quality, not proof of fit. They judge projects by published criteria, are funded by fees and use different tiers depending on the organizer. Apply the six vetting questions, clarify the agency's role and weigh reference calls, case studies and process higher. Then badges are a plus and not a substitute for checking.
