Key takeaways

  • Good means LCP up to 2.5 s, INP up to 200 ms and CLS up to 0.1 at the 75th percentile
  • The first visible image is static and small, heavy media load later
  • For B2B explainer scenes, an image sequence or scroll-driven video is usually enough, real-time 3D only for free rotation or configuring
  • GSAP is now free, and gsap.matchMedia() handles mobile and reduced-motion variants in one block
  • With prefers-reduced-motion, the page shows the end state and the content is also available as text

In short: A 3D or scroll animation in Webflow stays fast if the first visible image is static and small, the heavy files arrive after the page has loaded, and the motion blocks nothing on the main thread. Technically, this usually runs through GSAP with ScrollTrigger, pre-rendered 3D sequences or video, and a clean reduced-motion variant. This page shows which technique fits when, where load time is really lost, and what a project needs for it.

Who this is for (and who it isn't)

This makes sense if you have to explain something a photo can't: a machine, a product with inner workings, a multi-step process, a platform with data flow. Scroll-driven animation guides visitors through the explanation without anyone having to press play.

It's probably not for you if

  • your page consists mostly of text and visitors are looking for a quick answer. Then motion gets in the way more than it helps.
  • you don't plan any upkeep for the page. Animations depend on layout and classes and break more easily than normal content when someone rebuilds things in the Designer later.
  • your most important goal is a Lighthouse score of 100 on a page with a 15 MB hero video. You can't have both.

If you only want a few fade-in effects, you don't need an agency. The built-in Webflow interactions are enough for that, and Webflow's documentation explains them well.

Where load time is really lost with animations

The three metrics Google uses to assess the loading experience are LCP (largest visible element), INP (response time to input) and CLS (layout shifts). "Good" means LCP up to 2.5 seconds, INP up to 200 milliseconds and CLS up to 0.1, each measured at the 75th percentile of page views, separately for mobile and desktop (web.dev, Web Vitals).

Animations hurt these values in four typical places:

  1. The hero medium is itself the LCP. A 3D render or video as the first element becomes the largest visible element. Google recommends never lazy loading the LCP image and setting fetchpriority="high" on the likely LCP image (web.dev, Optimize LCP).
  2. Lazy loading in the wrong place. Lazy loading above the fold delays the LCP. In the CrUX data that web.dev evaluates, the median of the 75th percentile was 2,922 ms without and 3,546 ms with lazy loading. The article itself stresses that this is only a correlation (web.dev, Lazy Loading). The rule of thumb: eager at the top, lazy for everything below.
  3. Long tasks on the main thread. Scripts that evaluate a lot on load increase input delay. That worsens INP (web.dev, Optimize INP). A scroll animation that recalculates layout on every scroll event is exactly that.
  4. Layout shifts. An animation container without a fixed height or aspect ratio jumps as soon as the medium loads. That costs CLS.

Which technique fits when

There is no single right method. The choice depends on what is supposed to move and how much interaction is needed.

TechnikGut fürTypisches RisikoReduced-Motion-Ersatz
GSAP mit ScrollTrigger auf HTML/SVGText, UI-Elemente, Linien, Karten, DiagrammeViele gleichzeitig animierte Elemente, Layout-ThrashingEndzustand sofort zeigen

Echtzeit-3D (WebGL, z. B. mit glTF-Modell)Drehbares Produkt, KonfiguratorHöchster Aufwand, GPU- und Akkulast auf MobilgerätenStatisches Rendering

Two notes on this. First: for most explainer cases in B2B, the image sequence or a scroll-driven video is the pragmatic route. You get render quality like from 3D software, without the browser having to calculate geometry. Real-time 3D only pays off when visitors should really be able to rotate or configure the object freely. There is a separate comparison on this: 3D configurator or rendering.

Second: if it has to be real-time 3D, glTF is the usual exchange format. The Khronos Group describes it as an open standard for delivering 3D scenes, standardized as ISO/IEC 12113:2022, with a binary variant .glb and KTX 2.0 texture compression, which reduces file size and GPU memory (Khronos Group, glTF).

GSAP in Webflow: what you should know

GSAP is the animation library that Webflow's own interactions are also built on. Webflow describes interactions as triggers plus actions on a timeline, with easing and ScrollTrigger including scrubbing (progress follows the scrolling, also backward) and pinning (Webflow Help, Interactions with GSAP).

Important for the decision: GSAP is now free for everyone, ScrollTrigger and SplitText included. GSAP is listed as a Webflow product (GSAP, Pricing). That lowers the barrier to using your own GSAP code alongside the visual interactions.

When are the visual interactions enough, and when do you need code?

  • Visual interactions: fade-ins, hover, simple scroll sequences, parallax, navigation. Maintainable for editors who only work in the Designer.
  • Custom GSAP code: image sequences on a canvas, timelines across several sections, dependencies between elements, control via data or CMS. For this, a script is loaded in the page footer, only on the pages that need it.

One detail that saves many projects: gsap.matchMedia(). With it, animation code runs only while a media query matches, and GSAP automatically cleans up animations and ScrollTriggers as soon as the condition no longer applies. Mobile breakpoints and the reduced-motion setting can be handled in one block this way (GSAP, matchMedia).

You can find a step-by-step guide in Scroll animation in Webflow: rebuild a world map, along with a video on YouTube (Scroll animation in Webflow: world map step by step).

The performance budget: the rules that should be set beforehand

Before a line of code is written, you need a budget. Otherwise chance decides in the end what the page costs. Sensible planning values, which you check against real measurements for each project:

  1. The first image is static. Poster, still image or SVG, small and with fetchpriority="high". The animation starts afterward.
  2. Heavy media load only when needed. Via loading="lazy" or via IntersectionObserver shortly before the viewport. Image sequences load in stages, the first frames first.
  3. Scripts only where they run. Include GSAP and plugins via page-level code instead of globally, with defer.
  4. Fixed dimensions for every animation container. Set the aspect ratio or height up front so nothing jumps.
  5. Only transform what the GPU can handle. transform and opacity instead of top, left or width. This avoids layout recalculation on every frame.
  6. Less on mobile. Smaller sequences, shorter pinning distances, or a still image instead of a scene. Mobile users still see the explanation, just packaged more lightly.
  7. Measure, don't guess. Lighthouse and PageSpeed Insights show lab and field data. The field data from the Chrome UX Report matters more once the page is live.

These are planning values from practice, not standard values. Every page has different starting data, which is why measurement after the build is a fixed part of the process.

Reduced motion: being able to switch motion off

prefers-reduced-motion is a CSS media feature that detects whether someone has enabled reduced motion in their system settings. With reduce, the page should suppress non-essential motion. Scaling and moving large objects can cause discomfort for people with vestibular disorders (MDN, prefers-reduced-motion).

WCAG 2.2 requires in success criterion 2.3.3 (Level AAA) that motion animation triggered by interaction can be disabled unless it is essential. prefers-reduced-motion counts there as a sufficient technique (W3C, Understanding 2.3.3). Level AAA is not a legal standard. As a quality feature it is still good to have, and it costs little to implement if you plan for it from the start.

What this means in practice:

  • Scroll-driven scenes show the target state directly under reduced motion, without pinning and without parallax.
  • Autoplay videos and loops don't start; a poster image is shown instead.
  • The content of the animation is also available as text. The explanation must never live only in the motion.
  • You test it with the system setting switched on, not just in the browser emulator.

How a project runs

A motion project typically runs in these five phases. This is a general scheme, and details differ by provider and project.

PhaseWas passiertErgebnis
1. Briefing und ZielWas soll Besucher nach der Szene verstanden haben? Welche Seite, welches Gerät, welcher Messwert?Ein Satz Ziel, Performance-Budget
2. StoryboardDie Szenenfolge als Skizzen, inklusive Reduced-Motion- und Mobil-VarianteStoryboard, Technikwahl
3. Asset-Produktion3D-Modellierung, Rendering oder Grafik, Export optimiert für WebSequenz, Video oder Lottie in Webformaten
4. Einbau in WebflowStruktur, Interactions oder GSAP-Code, Lazy LoadingSeite auf Staging
5. Messung und FeinschliffLighthouse, Felddaten, Geräte-Test, Reduced-Motion-TestMessprotokoll, Freigabe

Duration depends mainly on asset production. A pure interaction scene with existing graphics is a matter of days. A newly modeled, rendered 3D scene with a storyboard takes weeks.

Costs and timeline: what it depends on

There is no fixed price here, because the spread is huge. As a market comparison: a provider of motion design services names typical ranges on its own service page for website projects with motion, €8,000 to €15,000 (business website) and €15,000 to €30,000 (premium website). Individual animations or 3D models are priced there by scope and no figures are given (in-sync, Motion Design Agentur). That figure comes from a single provider and is not a market average, but it shows the order of magnitude.

Alternatives and when they are better

  • A good video instead of a scroll animation. If visitors should simply watch the story, a film with captions is easier to build and maintain. More on this: Explaining technology with a 3D explainer video.
  • Static infographic. Faster and more accessible for data and processes with few steps.
  • Framer or another tool. Works for smaller marketing pages, but has other limits around CMS and scaling. More on the tool in the glossary: Framer.
  • WordPress or TYPO3 with custom front-end code. Possible. The animation technique (GSAP, sequences, lazy loading) is platform-independent, only the integration differs.

How we do this

Webwavers is one of the seven Webflow Premium Partners in Germany and offers motion and web from one source. That avoids the handover between an animation studio and development. According to our motion design page, the scope of services includes storyboard, styleframes, 3D animation, motion graphics and web motion. We build scroll-driven sequences, Lottie animations or videos directly into Webflow or another stack. For formats, compression and lazy loading we keep an eye on load time, and the system setting "reduced motion" is taken into account.

FAQ

Do 3D animations slow down my Webflow page?

Not necessarily. Load time suffers if the heavy medium is itself the first visible element or scripts block the main thread. With a static poster, files loaded later and fixed container dimensions, LCP, INP and CLS stay in the green. That is measurable and belongs in the acceptance check.

Which technique is right: video, image sequence, Lottie or WebGL?

For explainer scenes in B2B, a scroll-driven video or an image sequence is usually enough. Lottie suits small vector animations. WebGL only pays off if visitors should be able to rotate or configure an object freely, because it has the highest effort and the highest load on mobile devices.

Is GSAP free in Webflow?

Yes. GSAP is now free for everyone, including ScrollTrigger and SplitText, and is listed as a Webflow product (GSAP, Pricing). The visual Webflow interactions run on GSAP anyway. License details are in GSAP's terms of use.

How do you handle prefers-reduced-motion correctly?

You detect the setting via CSS media query or with gsap.matchMedia() and show the end state instead of the motion when reduce is set. Videos don't start automatically, parallax and pinning are dropped. The content is also available as text. Test with the system setting enabled.

How is lazy loading used with animations?

Everything above the fold loads immediately, especially the LCP element. Below it, you load sequences and videos only shortly before they reach the viewport, for example via loading="lazy" or IntersectionObserver. Lazy loading on the hero image worsens the LCP.

Can I reuse animations for several languages?

Yes, if text and graphics are separate. Labels then sit as HTML text over the medium or as a swappable layer, and the sequence itself stays language-neutral. If you bake text into the video, you have to re-render for each language.

Does this also work on mobile?

Yes, with its own mobile variant. Smaller sequences, shorter scroll distances or a still image instead of a scene keep load time and battery load low. The explanation itself is preserved.
