Key takeaways

  • An aviation brand has to convey calm and reliability, because customers cannot verify safety themselves and therefore look at presentation, proof and attitude
  • The brand system covers name, wordmark, colors, typography, imagery and applications from the aircraft to the website, and has to work in digital, print and on physical objects
  • For suppliers, proof is part of the brand: the EN 9100 certificate is valid for three years at most, and without an entry in the OASIS database the proof does not count as provided
  • A rebrand pays off when presentation and ambition diverge, a relaunch is enough when the brand holds and only the website is outdated
  • A wordmark can be filed with the DPMA for €290 with up to three classes and is protected for ten years, and the search beforehand is part of a rebrand

Short answer: Branding in aviation means making trust visible where customers cannot check safety themselves. A complete brand system consists of name, wordmark, colors, typography, imagery and applications from the aircraft to the website. For charter and broker brands, calm and exclusivity come first, for suppliers proof and precision, for flight schools orientation and reliability. An agency is a good fit if it shows references with a similar standard and knows the specifics of the industry.

Who this page is for

Aviation is not a uniform target group. The brand task differs significantly depending on the business model.

The market situation makes differentiation more important. According to BDLI, the German aerospace industry reached revenue of €62 billion in reporting year 2025 (previous year €52 billion), with 130,000 employees and an export rate of 66%, of which €45 billion in civil aviation (BDLI, industry data 2026). According to GBAA (as of end of 2024), on-demand air transport in Germany serves 198 airports and airfields, about seven times as many as scheduled traffic with 28 (GBAA, Insights on-demand air transport, January 2026). At the same time, automotive suppliers lost 24% of their workforce from August 2019 to August 2025 (VDA, quoted in Verkehrsrundschau, October 2025). A supplier looking for new markets therefore competes against established providers in aviation and has to explain itself there with a brand of its own.

What makes branding different in aviation

Three traits shape the task.

Trust without a way to verify. A passenger does not see how maintenance is done. A purchaser does not see the audit. Both judge by presentation, language, proof and attitude. The brand is therefore more than design: it is the sign that someone takes responsibility.

Regulatory framework. Commercial transport requires an operating license. Under § 20 LuftVG (German Aviation Act), aviation companies need a license for the commercial transport of passengers, mail or cargo, which is granted under EU Regulation 1008/2008 and revoked if the requirements permanently cease to apply (Gesetze im Internet, § 20 LuftVG). For branding, this does not mean the brand presentation is regulated, but it does mean that the company name and the details on the website must match the documents. If you change your name, clarify beforehand with the authority and your legal advisor which documents need to be adjusted.

Long life cycles. An aircraft flies for decades, a certificate runs for years, and so do contracts. An aviation brand is not swapped every year. That argues for timeless design and against trends.

The brand system: building blocks and applications

A brand system for aviation consists of foundations and applications.

BildweltFotografie, Illustration, 3DZurückhaltend, authentisch, ohne Klischee-Bilder

AnwendungenGeschäftsausstattung, Kabine, Plakate, WebsiteDigital, Druck und Objekte konsistent

For suppliers, applications also include how certificates are presented. EN 9100 is the quality standard of the aerospace industry, first published by the IAQG in 1998. According to DQS, anyone who processes aerospace components needs certification to EN 9100 or EN 9110. The certificate is valid for three years at most, with surveillance audits every year. Without an entry in the IAQG's OASIS database, the proof of an internationally recognized, accredited certificate does not count as provided (DQS, EN 9100). For the brand, this means: certificates belong on a page of their own, with number, scope and validity, instead of a row of logos in the footer.

Rebrand or relaunch?

Many aviation companies have a website that is older than their brand. That raises the question of whether only the website gets rebuilt or the whole brand.

SituationEmpfehlung

A practical test: put the business card, the proposal cover, the website and the trade show booth side by side. If it looks like one company, the brand holds. If it looks like four, you need a brand system.

Trademark protection and name rights

A new name or a new symbol needs a search. At the German Patent and Trade Mark Office, filing a trademark online with up to three classes costs €290, and each additional class from the fourth costs €100. Protection lasts ten years from the filing date and can be renewed (€750 for up to three classes) (DPMA, trademark fees). For internationally active companies, further registers are relevant. A search for older, similar trademarks before filing is important so that the name is not challenged shortly after launch. This is a matter for legal advice, not a design topic, but it belongs in the rebranding plan.

Accessibility and multilingual setup

Two requirements affect aviation websites in particular.

Accessibility. Section 1 para. 3 of the BFSG (Accessibility Strengthening Act) names online booking tools and e-commerce, among others. A flight school with online booking for consumers therefore likely falls within its scope, while microenterprises with fewer than 10 employees and at most €2 million in revenue or balance sheet total are exempt for services. Pure B2B sites are mostly not covered (Görg, BFSG). Have your situation checked case by case. More in the guide Accessibility (BFSG, WCAG) with agencies and relaunches.

Multilingual setup. The industry is international: according to BDLI, the aerospace industry's export rate is 66%. An English version is therefore usually a must for suppliers and brokers, not an extra. How to solve this cleanly on the technical side is covered in the guide Multilingual company website.

How to choose a branding agency for aviation

The question "Which agency can handle the rebrand of our charter provider?" cannot be answered with a single name. Check agencies against criteria.

On the decision between agency, in-house team or an individual: Branding agency, in-house or advertising agency. On services: Branding and Web design.

How we do it

Webwavers has delivered two projects in private aviation.

Lenti Aviation (2025, corporate identity). According to the project page, the brand identity is meant to convey calm, exclusivity and trust. The visual language is deliberately reduced and high-quality, to portray private aviation authentically. Colors, typography and shapes are meant to convey elegance and orientation without being pushy. The elements include the wordmark with the tagline "The right choice for private flights", business stationery on black and green posters with patterned surfaces. The branding is the basis for the web design and the build in Webflow (Lenti Aviation project).

OnlyJets (2026, web design). OnlyJets offers brokerage, charter and consulting in private aviation. The new web presence is meant to make exclusivity, trust and professional competence visible, with reduced layouts, generous imagery and a calm design language. The three services are presented clearly. It was built entirely in Webflow, with a clear page structure, fast load times and a flexible base for later extensions (OnlyJets project).

The workflow is on the process page: a non-binding initial call, an onboarding with 34 strategy questions, a strategy call on goals and positioning, and three moodboards from which you choose a direction. After that the design is created in Figma, every milestone has a feedback round, and nothing moves on without your approval. After final approval, development runs in Webflow, Framer or WordPress, and the launch comes with personal onboarding. A fixed project lead and a dedicated Slack channel are part of it.

When you do not need an agency

You do not need an agency if you are a small, established company with a brand that holds and you only want to update content. A supplier that sells exclusively through industry directories and direct contacts and has no brand ambition can also get by with a simple, correct website. An agency pays off when the brand is meant to grow, a change of target group is coming or presentation and ambition diverge.

Frequently asked questions

Which agency handles the rebrand of a charter provider?

There is no single right agency. Check references with a premium standard, a complete brand system instead of just a logo, experience in the industry and implementation through to the website.

How do branding agencies for aviation differ?

By references, by scope (strategy, design, website, applications) and by industry knowledge. You can compare them by asking everyone the same questions: What do you deliver, who works on the project, how does approval work, and what happens after launch.

What belongs in a complete brand system?

Positioning, name and tagline, wordmark and symbol, color palette, typography, imagery, language and applications such as business stationery, aircraft branding, cabin and website. What matters is that all parts work together.

Do I need to protect my brand name?

It is advisable. At the DPMA, filing online with up to three classes costs €290, and protection lasts ten years. A search for older trademarks beforehand is important and falls under legal advice.

How do I present certificates such as EN 9100 on the website?

On a page of their own with number, scope, issuing body and validity. The EN 9100 certificate is valid for three years at most, so update the page after every recertification and check the entry in the OASIS database.

Does the BFSG apply to aviation websites?

A flight school or a provider with online booking for consumers likely falls within its scope, while microenterprises are exempt for services. Pure B2B sites are mostly not covered. Have it checked legally case by case.

Do I need an English website?

Usually yes. The industry is export-heavy (66% export rate according to BDLI), and purchasers and customers often come from abroad. Plan for English from the start in structure and content.
